Cher Ami was a homing pigeon who served with the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War I. She was one of over 600 pigeons that were used to deliver messages between troops on the front lines and their commanders.

Major Whittlesey was the commander of the 1st Battalion, 308th Infantry Regiment, which became known as the "Lost Battalion" after it was cut off from the rest of the American forces during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in October 1918.

For five days, the Lost Battalion fought bravely against overwhelming odds. They were surrounded by German forces and had no food, water, or ammunition. Whittlesey sent out several messages by pigeon, but none of them reached their destination.

On October 4, 1918, Whittlesey sent out one last message, this time by Cher Ami. The message was simple and desperate: "We are surrounded and suffering heavy casualties. We need immediate help."

Cher Ami flew through heavy gunfire and over enemy lines to deliver the message to American headquarters. The message was received and reinforcements were sent to rescue the Lost Battalion.

Cher Ami's flight saved the lives of over 190 American soldiers. She was awarded the Croix de Guerre, the French military's highest honor, for her bravery.

Major Whittlesey and the Lost Battalion were eventually rescued, but the battle had taken a heavy toll. Over 200 American soldiers were killed and over 400 were wounded.

The story of Cher Ami and Major Whittlesey is a testament to the incredible courage and sacrifice of those who served in World War I. It is a story that should never be forgotten.
