By Kara Hughes
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
- John McCrae
These lines, written by a Canadian soldier during World War I, have come to be synonymous with the war's tragic toll. In Flanders Fields, Kara Hughes brings these lines to life in a haunting and heartbreaking novel that tells the story of two young men from different sides of the conflict who find themselves fighting for survival in the trenches of the Western Front.
Tom is a young Englishman who has always dreamed of becoming a soldier. When war breaks out, he eagerly enlists, believing that he will be fighting for a just cause. However, the reality of war is far from what he imagined. Tom is quickly confronted with the horrors of trench warfare, where death and destruction are all around him. He witnesses the death of his friends and comrades, and he himself is wounded in action. Despite the horrors he has seen, Tom refuses to give up hope. He believes that he is fighting for a better future, and he is determined to do his part to end the war.
Karl is a young German who has been conscripted into the army. He is not a soldier by choice, but he is determined to do his duty. Karl is a kind and compassionate young man, but he is also a skilled soldier. He quickly rises through the ranks, and he soon finds himself in command of a company of men. Karl is a good leader, but he is also haunted by the horrors of war. He sees the death and destruction that war brings, and he knows that there can be no winners in this conflict.
Tom and Karl's paths cross in the trenches of Flanders. They are on opposite sides of the conflict, but they are both fighting for the same thing: survival. They are both young men with hopes and dreams for the future. But the war has taken its toll on them both, and they are both struggling to hold on to their humanity.
In Flanders Fields is a powerful and moving novel that tells the human cost of war. It is a story of courage, sacrifice, and hope. It is a story that will stay with you long after you finish reading it.
