Law's story is a microcosm of the mass incarceration crisis that has swept the United States over the past several decades. She is a single mother, a victim of domestic violence, and a person of color—all factors that have been shown to increase the likelihood of arrest and imprisonment. Once she is arrested, Law is subjected to a Kafkaesque legal process that seems designed to punish her at every turn. She is denied bail, held in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions, and pressured to plead guilty to a crime she did not commit.

Despite the overwhelming odds against her, Law refuses to give up hope. She fights for her rights, educates herself about the law, and mentors other women who are incarcerated. Through her courage and determination, she eventually wins her freedom and rebuilds her life.

Moved By The State is a powerful indictment of the criminal justice system and a testament to the power of hope. Law's story is a reminder that even in the darkest of times, it is possible to find redemption.
