The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is a political and military alliance of countries from North America and Europe. It was established in the aftermath of World War II to prevent another such conflict. NATO has played a major role in maintaining peace and security in Europe for over 70 years.

Origins of NATO

NATO was founded on April 4, 1949, with the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty by 12 countries: Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
