About the Author

Coleman Alexander Young (May 15, 1918 – November 29, 1997) served as the 65th Mayor of Detroit, Michigan from 1974 to 1994. He was the first African American to hold the position.

Young was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and moved to Detroit with his family when he was a child. He graduated from Cass Technical High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war, Young worked as a union organizer and civil rights activist before entering politics.

As Mayor of Detroit, Young oversaw a number of significant urban renewal projects, including the construction of the Renaissance Center and the Detroit People Mover. He also implemented a number of social programs, such as the Detroit Plan for Economic Development and the Detroit Youth Employment Program.

Young was a controversial figure throughout his career, but he was also a popular and effective leader. He was known for his blunt speech and his willingness to stand up for his beliefs, even when they were unpopular.

Young died of a heart attack in 1997. He is buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Detroit.
